We were delighted to be invited last week to present at the University of Cyprus at an event organised for the Alumni Association on the 26th April 2012 in Nicosia. Our director Julia Papageorgiou presented some ideas for ways in which graduates and professionals can use social media platforms such as LinkedIn, Facebook, Twitter, Google + and YouTube for recruitment and career advancement purposes.
The event had a great turn out with more than 100 students, graduates and professionals turning up to get some practical tips on how to discover job opportunities using these platforms.
As the use of social media for recruitment purposes continues to rise both from a recruitment agency and also company human resources perspective, those who are on the job market need to maximise use of these essential tools. In light also of the increased unemployment and high competition for limited places, it becomes even more important to find new ways to present your profile in a favourable light.
Our presentation showed some practical ways to use key social networks such as LinkedIn, some of the key features to utilise and also discussed ways in which to build your network effectively. Julia also gave some advice on professional use of these networks and things to avoid, as research shows that currently one in 3 employers will reject a candidate based on what they find online about them.
Also speaking on the night was motivational speaker Michael Virardi who showed us all how to go about differentiating ourselves in this current climate and ways in which to present a positive image.
All attendees said the evening was very informative and useful – we wish them all best of luck and success with their career development!
